RMW360 | Nurse Well-Being | Coping To Flourishing

Reuben Rusk’s Five Layers of Flourishing framework is very relevant to RMW360’s focus on nurses’ well-being. Let me connect the dots:

1. Circumstances (system conditions)

For nurses, this means staffing levels, shift schedules, pay equity, and organizational culture. If these are misaligned (e.g., chronic understaffing), no amount of mindfulness apps or perks will sustain well-being.

2. Situations (immediate contexts)

Daily realities like patient load, interruptions, teamwork dynamics, and leadership support. A nurse’s experience of stress or support is shaped at this layer.

3. Moments (lived experiences)

The emotional highs and lows of a shift — successfully calming a patient vs. being overwhelmed by simultaneous urgent requests. These accumulate and define whether nurses feel valued or depleted.

4. Reflections (sense-making)

How nurses process their day: “I made a difference today” vs. “I’m drowning and nobody cares.” These reflections shape motivation and burnout risk.

5. Narratives (identity and meaning)

Over time, reflections crystallize into stories: “I’m a compassionate caregiver doing meaningful work” vs. “I’m an overworked cog in a broken system.” Narratives drive resilience, retention, and thriving.

🔑 Implication for RMW360:

RMW360 can position itself not just as a “copilot” for individual coping strategies, but as a compass across all five layers.

At the system level, it can highlight misalignments (e.g., workload vs. values).

At the individual level, it can help nurses reframe moments, strengthen adaptive reflections, and nurture healthier narratives.

This dual role makes it a bridge between personal well-being and organizational flourishing.
